Tantalizing Tangrams

Kindergarten students at Vance Elementary have been hard at work solving tangram puzzles! Tangrams are a wonderful way to begin developing geometric and spatial reasoning in young learners (click here if you'd like to learn more), and the kids enjoyed trying to solve a variety of animal puzzles. I love teaching with visual-spatial tasks because they can reveal creativity and intelligence in a wide range of learners.

Students followed along with a read aloud of Grandfather Tang's Story. In this book, a grandfather tells his granddaughter a story, using tangrams to form different animals. Students used their own set of tangrams to try to make the animals from the book, and they had great conversations about shapes and their attributes!

If you know of a student who might enjoy tangram puzzles but is unable to access these sites, just send an email to acsk2challenge@gmail.com to request some hard copies.

Happy puzzling!
