First Grade Challenge: January 2-6

Happy new year, first graders! For your first challenge of 2017, you will learn how adding two letters can change the meaning of a word. Those letters are U and N! Sometimes, adding "un" to the beginning of a word can make it mean the opposite. For example, someone who is kind is nice, but someone who is unkind is mean. Something that is necessary is something that you need, but something that is unnecessary is something that you do not need.

For your challenge this week, you will do a 3-2-1 activity.

First, find or think of three examples of words that can be changed by adding "un" to the beginning. I gave you two examples (kind can be turned into unkind, necessary can be turned into unnecessary), but you will need to come up with three of your own!

Next, think of two nonexamples. In other words, think of two times where you can't make a new word by adding "un." For example, you have heard of the word "sad," but there is no such word as "unsad."

Finally, think of one word that starts with "un" but doesn't follow our rule. For example, the word "under" begins with "un," but it doesn't mean the opposite of "der"... because "der" isn't a word!

Have a grown up send your answers to acsk2challenge@gmail.com . You will get a certificate, and your name will be entered into a drawing to win a sweet treat! Good luck!
